Gespräch mit Rob Davies:
The WTO and EPA negotiations. Their implications for South Africa and developing countries in general

In December 2007 the Economic Partnership Agreements (EPA) between the European Union and the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group (ACP) are due to come into effect. These free-trade agreements are part of the Cotonou treaties (which replaced those of Lomé) and have been negotiated and hotly debated since 2002. As the former treaties allowed the ACP special access to European markets and were not limited to trade alone, the EPAs will also affect aid and political cooperation.

Dr Rob Davies studied Economics at Rhodes University Grahamstown and at the University of Sussex where he obtained his Doctorate in International Relations. During the struggle he was member of both the African National Congress and South African Communist Party in Mozambique. He returned to South Africa in 1990 and became Professor and Co-Director of the Centre for Southern African Studies at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). Since 1994 he has been a member of the South African Parliament and in 2005 was appointed Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry. Input in English followed by discussion.
