Farai Mahaso (Zimbabwe):
Zimbabwe: HIV/Aids and Human Rights

HIV/Aids activists in Zimbabwe are successfully advocating for the rights of infected persons. Their insistence is not only producing remarkable results for the large community of People Living with Aids but their advocacy is also setting an example of activism for other sectors of society. Despite the still critical situation in Zimbabwe, there are clear indications that the rate of new infections has been decreasing considerably since 2003. This is owed to organisations like BHASO (Batanai HIV/Aids Service Organisation) in Masvingo, a partner organisation of fepa. Amongst other activities BHASO is fighting against stigma, forming advocacy and children’s rights groups, providing counselling and encouraging voluntary testing. With their link to roughly 700 support groups in rural Masvingo they have had a tangible impact on the lives of People Living with Aids.

The coordinator of BHASO, Farai Mahaso, will talk about the experiences of his organisation in the Zimbabwean context.
