David Coplan:
Julius Malema and the State of the ANC

On 13 November 2011 the ANC banned the president of its Youth League, Julius Malema, for a period of five years. Since 2007 Malema has increasingly occupied the public domain of political discourse and of virtually any private discussion in South Africa. Emblematic for this is his use of the song Shoot the Boer, which was even reported in the Swiss media. With his populist speeches and actions Malema put his finger on pressing political questions such as economic redistribution, land reform, and nationalisation. For some time this was very useful to the ANC until Julius Malema started to challenge president Zuma's leadership.

In our discussion with Prof David Coplan we will deal with Malema's skillful articulation of ANC history and the interrelatedness of his career with the current state of the ANC as a political party.

David Coplan is professor in Social Anthropology at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. He is specialising in popular culture, media and performance amongst others..
