Afriqu'à midi vom 31. März 2011:

Chinese construction projects
and timber extraction in Mozambique

China is flexing its muscles on a global scale. To curb fears of a new superpower, China stresses its “leading role” in the Third World and the need for “multipolar” alliances to counter US hegemony. Recently, China’s involvement in Africa has received much attention as the EU and the US are facing competition from an adversary known for having “no political strings attached” in terms of business investments and international development.

Our guest Morten Nielsen is assistant professor at the Department of Anthropology, Archaeology and Linguistics at Aarhus University, Denmark. His research examines China’s current involvement in infrastructure projects and resource extraction in subSaharan Africa and the increasing tensions between Chinese companies and national governments. The presentation is based on recently collected ethnographic data from Mozambique.
